  • The governments of Brazil and Paraguay, represented respectively by Centrais Elétricas do Brasil (Eletrobras) and Administración Nacional de Electricidad (Ande) also share the management and the right to purchase the energy produced for own consumption. [G4-4; G4-7]

In October, during the 2015 edition of the Universal Exhibition, Itaipu joined the Charter of Milan (the document was named in honor of the Italian city where the event was held). It calls on the whole society to assume its responsibility to ensure that future generations can enjoy the right to food. There are four main points: sustainable development, promotion of responsible agriculture, reduction of inequality in urban areas and respect for the socio-cultural identity provided by food.

Participation in associations and national and international organizations

Itaipu supports and participates in associations, institutes, committees and national and international councils that promote initiatives related to sustainability and that are aligned to business strategies. Noteworthy is the participation of the binational on the board of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the 2025 Corporate Group of Report Leaders of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) responsible for the preparation of the Sustainable Procurement Standard – ISO 20400, the permanent technical commission of the Lasting Initiative For Earth Institute or Lasting Initiative by Terra (Life Institute) and the management board of the Brazilian Board of Business Volunteers (CBVE). The company is also a member of the Anti-corruption Working Group and coordinates the Human Rights and Labor Working Group of the Brazilian Network of the UN Global Compact.

Timeline
  • 1966
    Signing of the Iguaçu Minutes: Brazil and Paraguay begin negotiations on an agreement for energy exploration of Paraná River.
  • 1973
    On April 26, the presidents of Brazil and Paraguay signed the Itaipu Treaty.
  • 1974
    The Itaipu Binacional entity is formed and the infrastructure for receiving the workers begins to be implemented.
  • 1975
    Construction of the plant. The initial project included 18 generating units, with a total installed capacity of 12,600 megawatts (MW) and annual production of 75 million megawatthours (MWh).
  • 1982
    Reservoir formation in only 14 days. On November 5 Itaipu was officially inaugurated.
  • 1984
    The first generating unit starts producing energy in the testing phase. Commercial operation started a year later.
  • 1991
    The 18 th generating unit begins its operations and municipalities and the Brazilian states are included in the distribution of royalties.
  • 1997
    Debt refinancing of the plant construction by Eletrobras.
  • 1999
    Itaipu reaches the production of 90 million MWh of energy.
  • 2000
    For the first time Itaipu breaks the world record for power generation by producing 93,427,598 MWh.
  • 2003
    Inclusion of social and environmental and economic responsibility and sustainable economic, tourism and technological development in the company’s mission.
  • 2005
    Reversal Notes provide that environmental initiatives are permanent components in the company. The public selection process for hiring employees is deployed.
  • 2006
    Adherence to the provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX).
  • 2007
    The latest installed generating unit comes into operation, totaling 20 and 14,000 MW.
  • 2008
    Itaipu beats its own world record by generating 94,684,781 MWh.
  • 2009
    Creation of Ombudsman (Brazil) and Defense (Paraguay).
  • 2010
    Creation of the Social Responsibility Advisory Board.
  • 2012
    Itaipu records for the third time the world’s largest energy production, with 98,287,128 MWh. The Sustainability Management System (SGS) is launched.
  • 2013
    By generating 98,630,035 MWh, Itaipu reaches the world’s largest power generation mark for the fourth time.
  • 2014
    The binational celebrates 40 years of its creation and 30 years of power generation.
  • 2015
    The plant takes up the world leadership in annual power generation, which in the previous year was won by China’s Three Gorges dam.
