The commitment of Itaipu as an induced sustainable development agent is present in a diplomatic instrument signed between Brazil and Paraguay, before the company was built, as well as the business plan and sustainability policy. In the preparation and implementation of programs and projects, the company considers as a reference various national and international documents such as the Earth Charter, the Global Compact Principles, Sustainable Development Goals (ODS), among others.

The performance of the company, in Foz do Iguaçu, where the plant is installed and in the area of influence includes social and environmental programs in health, education, culture, tourism, professional training and improvements in infrastructure aimed at local development and, wherever possible, seeks to cooperate regionally with federal public policies. Several of these initiatives involve the stakeholders’ engagement.

In addition there are specific programs for evaluation and monitoring of impacts: [+] Environmental Monitoring and Evaluation Program and [+] Dam safety. It also acts as an articulator along with other institutions, to attract public and private investments for projects in the region. Itaipu maintains two foundations that contribute directly to the development and quality of life in the region of influence. The Itaiguapy Health Foundation manages the [+] Ministro Costa Cavalcanti Hospital (built by the company to attend the Brazilians laborers working in construction), benefiting users of the Unified Health System (SUS) of nine municipalities and a population of about 400,000 inhabitants. As for Itaipu Technological Park Foundation (FPTI), the main regional educational and innovation center, it has three universities within its area and is home to several laboratories and a business incubator.
