Most of the water is consumed by Itaipu for energy production (non-consumptive use) and is not significantly altered in volume or quality during the process. For consumptive use, the company captures on average 800 m³/day of water, an amount well below the 19,000 m³/day established as withdrawals that significantly affect water sources by Resolution number 1175 (09/16/2013) of the National Water Agency (ANA).

Nor there is any uptake in areas listed in the Ramsar Convention (international treaty that lists the natural or artificial wetlands important for maintaining species diversity and for the well-being of human populations, such as swamps, marshes, lakes and reservoirs).
