Principles of the Global Compact

1. Respect and support internationally recognized human rights in its area of influence

  • Itaipu participates in national and international organizations and/or endorse human rights initiatives.
  • Keeps reporting channels such as the Ombudsman and the Ethics Committee.
  • Offers its employees benefits such as medical, dental and education aid.
  • Encourages the work of committees designed to ensure the health and safety of workers.
  • Adopts social clauses in hiring suppliers.

2. Ensure no company involvement in human rights violations

  • Holds an annual seminar on human rights for security professionals (employed and employees of business that provide services to Itaipu).
  • In the bidding process, Itaipu includes social clauses on youth contraction, forced or compulsory labor and respect for gender equality.
  • Determines that companies contracted to provide services proving payment of wages, overtime, thirteenth salary, notice and other changes, and may terminate the contract in case of noncompliance.

3. Support freedom of association and recognize the right to collective bargaining

  • All employees have union representation and are covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

4. Eliminate all forms of forced or compulsory labor

  • Develops the Initiation and Incentive to Work Program (PIIT).
  • Develops the Protection Program for Children and Adolescents (PPCA).
  • Develops the Sustainability Program for Indigenous Communities.
  • Adopts social clauses in the supplier selection process.
  • Determines that companies contracted to provide services proving payment of wages, overtime, thirteenth salary, notice and other changes, and may terminate the contract in case of noncompliance.
  • Requires the Declaration of Awareness and Compliance with Social Commitment of its suppliers.

5. Effectively eradicate all forms of child labor in its supply chain

  • Uses social criteria in selecting suppliers.
  • Develops the Protection Program for Children and Adolescents (PPCA).

6. Encourage practices to eliminate any type of discrimination in employment

  • Adopts selection processes for the formation of staff since 2005.
  • Adopts wage policies and education programs that are independent of gender.

  • Has Gender Equality Policy and Guidelines since 2011 and a Gender Equality Committee.

7. Take a responsible and proactive and preventive approach to environmental challenges

  • Develops the Cultivating Good Water Program, with the participation of several partners – participative management
  • Has targets for reducing consumption of electricity and fossil fuels.
  • Performs proper disposal of waste and uses recycled materials.
  • Develops the Environmental Education Program.
  • Rehabilitates and conserves water resources, riparian forests and areas around the reservoir and in the river basin region of ParanĂ¡ 3 (BP3).

8. Develop initiatives and practices to promote greater environmental responsibility

  • Has the Sustainability Policy and Sustainability Management System.

  • In addition to programs, projects and actions carried out in social and environmental areas, the company acts as articulator to formalize partnerships with governments, third sector, public and private companies in actions aimed at socio-economic and sustainable development of the influence area.

9. Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies

  • Maintains Itaipu Technological Park Foundation (FPTI).
  • Through the Renewable Energy Platform, conducts research with an emphasis on Distributed Biogas Generation.
  • Promotes research and development of solutions in mobility, especially prototypes of electric vehicles and their components.
  • Adopts computer technologies that reduce the use of paper.

10. Combat corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery

  • Has a Code of Ethics and Conduct for Suppliers and keeps reporting channels as the Ombudsman and the Ethics Committee.
  • Adherence to the provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX).
  • Submits procedures and documents to the assurance of internal audit and external companies.
  • Uses integrated management systems.
  • Follows the General Procurement Standard (NGL), which governs the hiring of services and purchases products and performs binational electronic trading sessions.
