Chairman Letter

It is with great satisfaction that I am writing to you, the reader, to present our annual indicators of sustainability.

When I took office as the Brazilian General Director on March 23 , 2017, was moved by a great passion for ITAIPU and Foz do Iguaçu, due to the family ties I have with this Municipality.

The personal demand is great and we are gradually implementing changes in the strategic management of the Entity.

Among them, there is the increase in the scope of our socio-environmental responsibility programs, from 29 to 54 municipalities, 53 in Paraná and one in Mato Grosso do Sul.

ITAIPU has been entering into technical cooperation agreements with several of these municipalities in order to restore rural roads, protect springs or remaining forests, conserve soils, plant riparian forest, and other activities to preserve and extend the useful lives of the multiple use of the reservoir of the Plant.

The historic relationship with the conservation of biodiversity - during the installation of the Plant, wildlife refuges, assistance and support structures for the recovery of fauna and flora species and several environmental projects were created - keeps ITAIPU as sector leader and as a reference for other countries.

These efforts guarantee a genetic reserve of threatened species, as in the case of the birth in our Bela Vista Biological Refuge of the first spotted jaguar (Panthera onca) in 14 years of captive breeding attempts.

Cacau, who was born on December 28 , 2016, will be another link of binational integration, since it will be transferred to the Paraguayan margin of ITAIPU, and will live with a male jaguar, starting a breeding program in Paraguay.

In 2017, we also reached a new milestone: our plant's accumulated clean and renewable energy output exceeded 2.5 billion megawatt hours from the start of its operation in 1984.

And, in order to maintain the level of excellence, the Technical Board has initiated the process of technological upgrading of the Power Plant, with an estimated time of ten years, which aims to implement a 100% digital energy production control system, with an investment of USD 500 million.

I would also like to highlight the agreement entered into in 2017 between ITAIPU and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) to develop sustainable water and energy solutions in line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (ODS).

Through this partnership, we will share the experience accumulated in our socio-environmental responsibility programs, the development of electric vehicles and the use of other renewable energy sources, such as biogas and biomethane.

In addition, we continue in the process of valuing the workforce and strategic-cultural alignment, aiming at creating a synergy that results in the improvement of the organizational environment, so that employees feel even more satisfied, motivated and proud to work at ITAIPU.

Therefore, the programs Bate-Papo com o Vianna [Chat with Vianna] and Fale com o Vianna [Talk to Vianna] are in full operation. To complement these actions, the Vianna tá na Área! [Vianna is Here] program was created, with visits aimed at getting to know the physical facilities and valuing people's work.

In addition, in celebration of this year's Women's Month, one of the activities carried out was the lunch that I had with members of the Gender Committee to discuss the advances and challenges of gender issues in our Entity.

When I undertook my position, ITAIPU was considered the largest clean and renewable electricity generator in the world.

Today, I know that - in order to reach this level and at the same time be a reference for integration between two border and brother countries - there are many specific and important aspects, on which you will have a better idea in this Report, our instrument of transparent management.

Have a great reading!
