At Itaipu, tourist visits increase 30% in July

After breaking the record for tourist visits in the first six months of the year, Itaipu opened the second half of 2012 establishing a new historic mark.  In July, school holidays period, the number of tourists who visited the attractions of the plant, was almost 30% over the same period last year.  There were 51,734 visitors, compared to 39,814 in July 2011.

The performance represents the best July since the plant has implemented the new model of tourism management in the Brazilian margin, in 2007, and was only 7% below the absolute record, of January 2012, with 55,867 visitors, the best month of last five years.

Considering the first seven months of the year, Itaipu recorded 266,296 visitors, an increase of 13.3% over the same period last year.  The evolution is even more significant compared with 2010 (30.4% more) and 2009 (41.38%).


As in the first half, the gratuity for the surrounding residents and the trinational region had an impact on the outcome of July.  There were recorded in the last month 4187 visitors to the region, compared to 1036 of July last year.  In the cumulative year, there are more than 31,000 visitors to the region already- in 2011, the partial number was 10,034.

The superintendent of Social Communication of Itaipu, Piolla Gilmar, who chairs the Fund Iguaçu, remember that the election of the Iguazu Falls as one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature, and the actions of the dissemination and promotion of Iguazu Destination , also maintain heating in the tourist movement.  "The changing of the image of the Iguazu Destination is noticeable.  We are reaping the results, "he says.

Surrounding cities

Gratuity for the surrounding neighbors started in April.  Since then, residents of 34 municipalities (26 in Brazil, four in Argentina and four in Paraguay) were no longer paying to see the attractions of the plant - with the exception of Special Tour and Electric Vehicle Test Drive.  Before, the free admission was restricted to the first Sunday of each month.

It is also part of the Panoramic Tour attractions - the most popular - the Lighting of the Dam, the Astronomical Polo, the Ecomuseum and Bela Vista Biological Refuge (RBV).

Iguazu Falls

Visitation at Iguazu Falls, the largest tourist attraction in the region, confirms the heating of the sector.  In July, nearly 160,000 tourists passed through the Iguazu National Park - where the falls are located -, compared to 132,000 for the same period last year.  The increase was 21%.  In the cumulative year, more than 870 000 people have passed through the national park.
