The UN (United Nations) Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Liu Zhenmin visited Itaipu on Thursday (17th) for the inauguration of the unit that will host the activities of the Sustainable Solutions in Water and Energy partnership. The agreement brings together the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations (UNDESA) and Itaipu Binational and was signed last March 7 at the UN headquarters in New York.
The visit was held on the date of the company's anniversary, which marks 44 years of its creation on May 17. "We know that the company was created by Paraguay and Brazil to produce electric power, but what you see is a company that promotes sustainable development, and that is going well in both areas. With its projects, Itaipu sets an excellent example for Brazil, Paraguay, Latin America and also for the world", said Zhenmin, after planting a Brazilwood seedling near the plant's Central Observation Deck.
"This visit is very symbolic because precisely on the day we celebrate our 44th anniversary, we reaffirm our commitments to the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and receive UN’s recognition, confirming that we are doing a good job, which deserves to be replicated", said Marcos Stamm, Braziian general director of Itaipu, who accompanied the planting of the tree.
The Paraguayan general director, James Spalding, reinforced the importance of the inauguration regarding the activities carried out in the surrounding area of the plant. "Itaipu has already shown that it can be a support for local communities. This unit can help further expand the actions that we already develop, and even bring them to other countries", he affirmed.
Focal Point
The recently inaugurated space will operate in the Itaipu International Hydro-informatics Center on the right bank (Paraguayan). This will be a focal point for the dissemination of projects and ideas that help in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region - especially numbers 6 and 7 (water and energy, respectively) that make up Agenda 2030.
The Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions partnership aims to promote capacity development, dialogues and cooperation to promote sustainable development. It also aims to identify key points and opportunities for integration, and to work collaboratively to direct actions to address these issues, such as sharing good practices, training and promoting specific innovations through international cooperation.
The idea is for the initiative to become a global network to address issues related to the water-energy nexus in a sustainable manner, with a large number of members from all regions including governments, companies, civil society and international organizations. The primary goal is for this alliance to establish a platform for stakeholders from around the world to increase their capabilities and signal a high-level commitment to act holistically.
The Visit
Throughout the day, the undersecretary visited several points of the plant, such as the Piracema Channel, the Reservoir Division’s laboratory and, at the Itaipu Technological Park, the Water Building and the Barrageiros Space. He also made a technical visit to the plant.
Also participating were Ivan Vera, former head of Water, Energy and Capacity Development at UNDESA; Lin Yan, special assistant to the undersecretary; Nicolas Franke, Sustainable Development Officer; Isabel Raya, coordinator of the Sustainable Solutions project; the director of Itaipu's Executive Coordination, Pedro Domanizcky; the Superintendent of Itaipu’s Environmental Management, Ariel da Silva and consultant Gustavo Paredes.
