The Itaipu spillway is of the sloping type and is located on the right bank, at a convenient distance from the generator units in order to not present a risk to the power plant. The maximum probable incoming flood to the reservoir employed in the design is of 72,020 m3/s.

One of the largest spillways in the world, it operated uninterruptedly for almost ten years while the generator units were being installed.

Due to this, it was built with three troughs, which facilitate maintenance and guarantee operational flexibility.
