The Concrete Technology Lab was designed to offer support to the construction of Itaipu. In operation since 1975, it performs activities related to the control and quality of concrete structures besides the technological analysis of concrete basic construction materials, from their origin. The Lab's field of action also includes soil mechanics and applied geology.

The Lab's systematic work has ensured advanced safety, quality and economy parameters to one of the largest engineering projects in terms of concrete volume in the world, which would not have been possible solely via conventional tests of “workability” and “simple axial resistance” or traditional statistic controls.

In regards to the dam's location, geotechnical studies performed by the Lab confirmed the foundation's geomechanical parameters by means of test borings done to treat the foundation, as recommended by the project. That treatment involved making injection membranes with 300 km of holes, the consumption of 4,500 tons of cement, and 100 km in drainage membrane holes, all that performed in an effort to relieve the sub pressures operating on the foundation.

Today, the technical reports and research put together by the Lab's staff, the data collected, the solutions adopted, and the comments regarding the Itaipu project make up a wealthy supply of information available to researchers. That knowledge also supports the performance of a wide range of tests and analyses related to quality control, safety and instrumentation of engineering projects.

The Lab performs:
- Concrete studies and dosages (features) according to pre-established conditions;
- Determination of thermal properties of binders, aggregates, batters, mortars and concrete;
- Determination of the physical and elastic-mechanical properties of cement, aggregates, pozzolanic materials, elastomers, epoxidic resins, batters, mortars, steel and concrete;
- Chemical analysis of cement, pozzolanic materials, water, additives and aggregates;
- Determination of soil characteristics and compaction;
- Rock shearing and simple compaction;
- Percussion drilling (SPT);
- Cement mortar studies;
- Calibration and gauging of auscultation and lab instruments;
- Instrumentation of structures, monitoring and analysis of result consistency;
- Reinstrumentation and inspection of dams.
