Milestone: Itaipu cumulative production reaches 2 billion MWh

At 6:55 pm, on Wednesday, August 8th, Itaipu Binational reached another milestone in its production of electricity. Since its commissioning in 1984 until today, the largest producer of clean and renewable electricity on the planet generated a total of 2 billion megawatt-hours (MWh).

All this mega-generation would be enough to supply the electricity consumption of the entire world for 39 days. The mark of 1 billion MWh was achieved on June 7, 2001. The new milestone in cumulative production, the 3 billion MWh mark, only to be reached in 2023, when the binational will settle the debt incurred for its construction.
 
The amount of energy produced by Itaipu in these 28 years would be enough to meet the electricity consumption in Brazil - industries, households, commerce and the public sector - for four years and eight months; of Paraguay, a partner in the venture, for 183 years, and of neighboring Argentina, for 17 years and nine months.

France, the largest consumer of electricity in Europe, could be supplied to for four years, less time than the UK - five years and six months. Germany, the richest country in the eurozone, would have three years and six months of electricity.

Even in the world's biggest consumers, the United States and China, the production of Itaipu would be significant. In the United States, it would supply the entire electricity consumption for six months, while in China for six months and twelve days.
 
Other comparisons show what that volume of energy represents. It would supply the consumption of Paraná for 76 years and would supply with electricity 430 cities the size of Greater Curitiba (2 million inhabitants). Or, even, it would meet the annual electricity consumption of 4,149 cities the size of Foz do Iguaçu.

The entire Latin America, excluding Brazil, could be supplied by this cumulative production from Itaipu for four years and seven months.
