Itaipu Binational had the second best August ever in energy production. The monthly generation reached 8,165,123 megawatt-hour (MWh) compared to 8,744,406 MWh in the same period of 2008, the year of the world record, which is held by the plant itself.

From early January until early afternoon this Friday (31), the power plant reached 67,292,321 MWh, which means an advantage of 12 days of generation or 4.5% compared to the historic year, when were produced 64,243,818 MWh. The advantage of this year as compared to 2008 reaches 3 million MWh.

Normally, August is a month of fewer waters. According to Superintendent of Operations (OP.DT), "during this time, it is often necessary to deal with scarcer water resources, which does not necessarily mean a low production because demand remains very good."

To meet the needs of the electrical system of Brazil and Paraguay, the Itaipu technical department optimized the use of the available resources. In a strategy coordinated by the National System Operator (ONS) and Ande (Paraguayan state), Itaipu saved on water usage during weekends, when demand decreases, to better use the raw material in the days when consumption increases .

The operation of the generators at their optimal point of operation was another important factor for a good production, valuing more the amount of water per MWh generated. Also important was the return to production on July 30, of the Tx/Rx transformer-regulator set, the Right Bank Substation (Semd) already repowerd, with a 20% increase in capacity in each set to send energy to Paraguay.

In the coming months, four other sets of Semd transformers-regulators will repowered. "This measure will enable greater flexibililidade and a greater number of alternatives for the outflow of the production," says the OP.DT.

According to the area, once again the performance of the power plant and its equipment was excellent, like the coordination between Itaipu, Eletrobras, Ande and ONS.

Some comparisons:

The generation until August 2012 - 67,380,664 MWh:
Would be enough to supply the entire electricity consumption of Paraná state for two years and seven months;
Would be enough to supply the entire electricity consumption of the city of Curitiba for 15 years;
Would be enough to supply the entire electricity consumption of the city of Foz do Iguaçu for 145 years;
Would be enough to supply the entire electricity consumption of the city of São Paulo for two years and five months;
Would be enough to supply the entire electricity consumption in Brazil for two months.

Production during the first eight months:

2012 – 67,380,484 MWh
2011 – 61,595,159 MWh
2008 - 64,096,969 MWh (year of the world record of annual energy production, with 94,684,781 MWh)
Variation 2012/2011: 9.4% - 22 production days ahead of 2011
Variation 2012/2008: 5.1% - 12 production days ahead of 2008 (record year)
