Itaipu registers its second best performance in May
Tamanho da letra

Itaipu produced a total of 8,083,287 megawatt-hours (MWh) last month. It was the second best month ever. The highest was recorded in 2008, the year that the plant broke the world record in annual generation: 94,684,781 MWh.
During the first five months of this year, Itaipu cumulatively produced 38,073,063 MWh compared to 31,754,943 MWh over the same period for 2010. The increase amounts to 19.9%. In 2008, for example, production up until May was 39,676,665 MWh.

A combination of factors proved decisive for the good performance of the operation. Hydrological conditions were favorable, equipment responded well and the plants operated with the nine generating units in the 50Hz sector and another nine of 60 hertz.
Despite the optimistic outlook, it is still early to make projections for the end of the year. With 20 generating units and 14,000 MW of installed capacity, Itaipu, the world's largest hydroelectric plant in power generation, provides 16.4% of the energy consumed in Brazil and supplies 71.3% of consumption in Paraguay.
