The scroll case in the generator unit is an unparalleled place. There, in that large pipe averaging 10 meters round, water that drops down the penstock gains even more speed to make the turbine spins. Some inspections to this essential part of the power plant are, therefore, required.

The scroll case in the generator unit is an unparalleled place. There, in that large pipe averaging 10 meters round, water that drops down the penstock gains even more speed to make the turbine spins. Some inspections to this essential part of the power plant are, therefore, required.

Part of the maintenance crew inspected the turbine wheel “teeth” while the technician from Curitiba-based company Engetintas went into the pipe that drains the scroll case. Their purpose was to check the efficiency of maintenance services performed in December 2007.

That day they coated the inner side of the pipes with a polyurethane-based paint.

To see whether the paint was in fact protecting the tubes they had to open a section and literally go into the pipe. After the inspection, all was as it should be. The paint had done its job.

Entryway

To get to the scroll case, technicians make go through a latch at quota 86, used only during maintenance. As for the rest of the year, it is best that it remains tightly locked. From then on the work is coordinated by metallurgist engineer José Roberto Fagundes Nora, from the Civil and Industrial Maintenance Division (SMMC.DT).

José Roberto's team dedicated themselves to eliminating rust from the door. They prepared the surface: the corroded layer of paint was removed and then they applied two coats of a special paint. When maintenance ends, the latch is once again closed and keeps waiting for the machine to go back into operation.
