Water macrophytes

One Itaipu action aimed at the study of water plants monitors 80 points in the reservoir in order to follow the colonization of the lake's ecosystem.

The methods consist of ranking the different points, which are small ecological niches of floating and underwater plants, according to levels of infestation. Levels range from zero, that is, no water plants, to five, a niche entirely covered by water macrophytes.

In addition, the studies seek to quantify a probable incidence of water plants in hydroelectricity generation.

To date, 64 species have been identified in the reservoir, and four of them are more prevalent: Egeria najas, Eicchornia azurea, Cyperus sp. and Salvinia nutans.
