Itaipu takes part in the implementation of a biodiversity conservation project that is the only one of its kind in the world, the Social-Environmental Information and Protection Center of the Prata Basin, an initiative that plans to leverage the human potential for biodiversity conservation.

A partnership between Itaipu, the Itaipu Technological Park Foundation (ITPF), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Prata Basin Countries' Intergovernmental Coordination Committee (CIC), the Center starts operating in 2007. It is be a place where scientific and folk knowledge will be shared as a means to promote sustainable development.

It is an innovative way to raise mankind's awareness regarding the need to reconcile economic development and environmental conservation.

The Center follows five guidelines: water as an integration theme; the Prata Basin as an operating territory; environmental thinking as the conceptual hallmark of initiatives; environmental education as an element capable of engaging society into action; and the collective construction of knowledge, actions and organization.

A dynamic intelligence center capable of bringing together, integrating and sharing traditional folk knowledge and the latest technology into its mission, the Center will operate in five countries (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay) with support from UNEP.

The idea of creating the Center arose in and was developed over Itaipu's Cultivating Good Water program meetings. Its facilities are located at the Itaipu Technological Park (ITP).
