Electricity generation, conveyance and distribution companies in Brazil are required by law to annually apply a minimum percentage of their net operating income into the Electricity Industry Technological Research and Development Program, pursuant to regulations established by the National Electricity Agency (Aneel).

Itaipu is not subject to that law due to its unique legal nature. However, because it knows how important it is to consider research, development and innovation as strategic initiatives, the plant implemented those activities as one of the three lines of action at the Itaipu Corporate University (ICU).

Among research, development and innovation areas of interest are electricity production; dam safety; power plant update; the environment; information technology; social technology; distributed generation; electric cars; and hydrogen production.
