The installed capacity of Itaipu is of 14 thousand megawatts (MW). The plant has 20 generating unities, each with a nominal capacity of 700 MW. The 19th unity was installed in 2006 and the last one in 2007.

The guaranteed energy production in Itaipu is of 75 million megawatts per hour, but the average production is around 90 million MWh.

The production exceeds the nominal capacity of generating unities mainly because of its operation and maintenance care. The availability indicators of the plant is among the best in the world.
