Itaipu accumulates awards and tributes in recognition of its work in several areas.

2016
 
2016 Ranking of Legitimate Sustainability - Itaipu obtained two first places in the 14th edition of Benchmarking Brazil. The company ranked first, with the "Biodiversity: Our Heritage" program. It also got first place in the new category called "Indicators", due to the set of indicators that confirm the binational environmental management. Itaipu had already been awarded first place in the 2007 Benchmarking (Cultivating Good Water program), in 2011 (Sustainable Rural Development program), and in 2012 (Watershed Management program). In 2013, it ranked second place with the Sustainability for Indigenous Communities program. In 2014, Itaipu was among the top 20 with the Friendly Waste Sorting program. And in 2012, it ranked as the best practices in sustainability in 10 years of the Benchmarking award, once again with the Cultivating Good Water program.
 
In the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in tourism, the Itaipu Tourist Complex was the winner of the UNWTO Award for Innovation in Research and Technology. In total, 13 countries participated in the competition in four categories with 16 projects.
 
Hugo Werneck – The Cultivating Good Water program (CAB, in Portuguese) was honored at the sixth edition of the Hugo Werneck Award, one of the main awards to environmental actions in Brazil. In that year, the theme of the award was "For the Waters of the Planet – From the Brazilian Water Tank to the Waterfalls Land". Seventeen projects and personalities that stood out for their examples in sustainability were awarded.
 
2015 
 
"Top 100 Innovative IT" Award – Itaipu competed in the Utilities category and took the 34th position in the overall ranking, ahead of giants such as Petrobras, Caixa and Embraer. The project was developed by the Superintendence of Informatics of Itaipu from demand submitted by the Coordinating Board. The Institute of Applied Technology and Innovation (Itai, in Portuguese) and the Latin American Center for Open Technologies (Celtab, in Portuguese), of the Itaipu Technological Park (ITP), participated in the project. 
 
Innovation and Technology Biomass Br Award – Encouraging research for the production of biofuels from waste of agricultural production in the region has given the company the award, which was created by the FRG Mídia Brasil, a company from Rio Grande do Sul, in 2013, focusing on communication in the renewable energy areas. The award is a way to encourage companies and entrepreneurs to keep on trying, searching for the sector to advance always more. 
 
Water for Life – The environmental program Cultivating Good Water, developed by Itaipu in partnership with 29 municipalities of the Paraná watershed 3, has received UN recognition as the best management of water resources in the world. The Cultivating Good Water program competed with 40 initiatives from all continents and won 1st place in the "Best practices in water management" category, in the 5th edition of the Water for Life Award, in 2015.
 
Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking – The Cultivating Good Water program was awarded in the 13th Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking. The "More Fish in Our Waters" case won first place. 
 
Life Certification – Itaipu Binacional is the third company in Brazil to receive the Life Certification, a methodology that assesses the effectiveness of the environmental management system of the company and actions for biodiversity conservation.
 
March 19 Award of Best Innovation – ComprasE, Electronic Purchasing System of Itaipu, received the award during the 10th Brazilian Congress of Pregoeiros, in Foz do Iguaçu. In its development phase, ComprasE also received the Notabile CIO Brazil Award, promoted by IT4CIO Network Technology, certified by the Institute without Borders (IWB).
 
Cumbres de Guadarrama – The Itaipu sustainability initiatives performed through the Cultivating Good Water program have granted it the Cumbres de Guadarrama awarded, by the Madrid Community (Spain), in January 2015. Since 1914, the award recognizes good examples of ecology, organizations, governments, people and national parks.
 

2014

Eco Sustainability Award - Itaipu Binational was one of the winners of the 32nd edition of the Eco Sustainability Award, promoted by the American Chamber of Commerce – Amcham Brasil. The company won in the Sustainability Practices in Processes and Services category (large company), with the Sustainability Management System project (SGS). This was the third time that Itaipu received the award.  In 2009 it won in the Sustainability and Processes category for the Cultivating Good Water project (CAB); the following year Itaipu came out on top in product Sustainability category with the project entitled "Electric Vehicle for Waste Pickers of Recyclable Material”.

Childhood Brasil – In December 2014, Itaipu Binational’s initiatives for the protection of children and teenagers achieved the highest score in the Indicator Assessment Report of the NGO Childhood Brasil’s Na Mão Certa program.. In November, at the 8th Na Mão Certa Corporate Conference, Itaipu received the Recognition Award from Childhood Brasil for its actions in combating the exploitation of children and adolescents.

Istoé’s +Conscious Companies Award – According to the organizers, the award recognizes corporations most willing to implement a new development model based on modern capitalism and in line with the environment and society in which they operate. Itaipu placed second in the Workers category and fourth for Governance. In the overall ranking among large companies Itaipu placed fourth.

Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking Award – The Solidarity Collection program, which forms part of the Cultivating Good Water project, placed among the 20 best Brazilian practices in the 12th edition of the Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking Award. Itaipu had already been awarded first place for Benchmarking in 2007 (with the CAB project), in 2011 (with the Sustainable Rural Development Program) and in 2012 (with the Drainage Basin Management project). In 2013 the plant obtained second place with Sustainability of Indigenous Communities program. And in 2012 it led the ranking of the best socioenvironmental practices in 10 years of the Benchmarking award.

Best Practices in Management and the Supervision of Administrative Contracts – Itaipu was given the award during the Brazilian Management and Supervision of Administrative Contracts Conference held in Foz do Iguaçu, for its General Services Request service (SSG). The award recognizes initiatives adopted to improve the management and supervision of contracts.  It was the second consecutive year that Itaipu won the award.  In 2013 the honor was given to a series of sustainable initiatives in the area of general services.

Ozires Silva Award – Itaipu Binational had two prominent projects in the Environmental Entrepreneurship in Education category (large and medium-sized companies) in the 7th edition of the Ozires Silva Award, an initiative by the Higher Education Institute for Administration and Economy (ISAE) of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and Paranaense Communication Group (GRPCOM).

The company won first place in the category with the project "Water: Knowledge for Management", a partnership between the National Water Agency (ANA) and the Itaipu Technology Park Foundation (FPTI), with the support of Itaipu, and received an Honorable Mention for the Environmental Education program, an initiative of the Cultivating Good Water project.

Belmiro Siqueira Administration Award – Itaipu won the Belmiro Siqueira Administration Award from the Federal Board of Administration (CFA), delivered during the 4th National Convention of the CFA/CRAS System, in Foz do Iguaçu. Itaipu competed with more than 400 companies from across the country, but its set of environmental and socially responsible initiatives in the Paraná Basin 3 (BP3) secured it the award as a Corporate Citizen.

2013

Top of Marketing ADVB. Itaipu is two-time winner of the Top Marketing Award, considered the Oscar of Paraná in that category, conferred by the Association of Sales and Marketing Managers of Brazil – Paraná Section (ADVB -PR). For the second consecutive year, the company was recognized for the best practice in the categories Hospitality, Tourism and Culture.

Marketing Best Sustainability. The Cultivating Good Water program (CGW), of Itaipu binacional and partners, received the Marketing Best Sustainability 2013Trophy, conferred to the best sustainable business actions in Brazil, supported by the Brazilian Marketing Academy and sponsored by the Reference Publishing Company. The award has been promoted for 12 years and this was the first time Itaipu was chosen.

Business for Peace Award. The Itaipu executive finance director, Margaret Groff, was the only Brazilian awarded with the Oslo Business for Peace Award 2013, sponsored by the United Nations Development Program – UNDP, International House of Commerce and Business Foundation for Peace, based in Oslo. The winners must have national or international recognition for the adoption of practices that created new values for their business, and that are also shared by society.

Environmental Benchmarking Award. Itaipu was again among the top 30 country's social-environmental practices selected by the Benchmarking Ranking. This time, the company achieved the second place in the annual award with the Indigenous Communities Sustainability program, an initiative of the Cultivating Good Water, which benefits 273 families distributed among the Ocoy, Añetete and Iatamarã communities.

2012

Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking. For the third time in five years, Itaipu was the winner of the Ranking Benchmarking of Holders of Best Practices in Sustainability in the country. The company competed with the case "Watershed Management", one of the actions of the Cultivating Good Water Program (CAB) developed by the Coordination and Environment Board.  The company also joined the ranking of best practices of the decade.

2011

Environmental Award Chico Mendes. For the second consecutive year, environmental actions of the Cultivating Good Water program, of the Itaipu Binational, were recognized with the Environmental Award Chico Mendes.

Americas Award. The Cultivating Good Water Program was chosen as an example of excellence in environmental sustainability category for Americas Award 2011.  The award is granted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in partnership with the International Training Centre for Local Actors for Latin America (CIFAL) - Atlanta, United States.

Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking.  Itaipu was chosen again to the Ranking Benchmarking of Best Practices for Sustainability in the country.  The company competed with the case "Management for Sustainability in the Rural Areas", one of the actions of the Cultivating Good Water Program (CAB).

June 5th Award.  Itaipu Binacional received in Curitiba, the June 5th Award, sponsored by the Public Affairs Institute of Brazil.  The award brought together representatives of public institutions throughout the country  Itaipu was awarded the Cultivating Good Water Program in Natural Resources Management category, as best design preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems (hydric resources, flora and fauna).

India Power.  Itaipu received the 4th India Power Awards, awarded by the Energy Council of Energy Companies in India.  The company was recognized for its efforts to the development of sustainable energy.

International Milestone Concrete Dam Projects. Itaipu received the award the "International Milestone Concrete Dam Projects" granted by the Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (Chincold) and the United States Society on Dams (USSD), at a ceremony held during the International Symposium on Modern Technologies and Long-term Behavior of Dams.

Pro-Equity Seal.  Itaipu received the Pro-Equity of Gender Seal.  It is the third time that the company receives the award - sponsored by the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women of the federal government, in partnership with the Development Fund for Women United Nations (UNIFEM), the Global Compact and the International Labour Organization ( ILO).

2010

Coge Foundation. Itaipu received the Coge Foundation Award, one of the most prestigious in the Brazilian electricity sector.  The recognition came in the Action of environmental responsibility category with the Electric Vehicle for Collectors Project.  It was the second time that the company received the award - the first time was in 2006, with the Cultivating Good Water Program.

Best Practices in Tourism.  The Special Tour, one of the attractions of the Itaipu Tourism Complex, has been awarded by the Ministry of Tourism (MTur) as one of the best practices of 65 destinations Inducers of Regional Tourism Development.  In total, Foz do Iguaçu had four chosen action, which made the municipality with the largest number of projects awarded.

ANA Award.  In  2010, Itaipu  received the highest national award in recognition of care with the water, the ANA Award, sponsored by the National Water Agency (ANA).  The world's largest hydroelectric power generation company was awarded in the company category, with its social and environmental program the Cultivating Good Water.

Clean Tech & New Energy.  Itaipu's capacity to produce clean, renewable energy has been recognized by the British magazine The New Economy, responsible for awards Clean Technology and New Energy.  Considered as "a leader in developing renewable energy sources", Itaipu was one of the winning, staying side by side with the largest energy companies in the world.  Projects of the company, as the Cultivating Good Water, the Platform for Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicle and the Itaipu Technological Park were mentioned as examples of successful initiatives.

Chico Mendes. The Social Environmental Chico Mendes Award recognizes efforts of Itaipu in the promotion of various environmental actions within the Cultivating Good Water program. . Promoted by Chico Mendes Institute, the award values actions focused at sustainable development through the human promotion and environmental conservation.

2009

The Pro Gender Equity Seal, from the 2nd edition of the Pro Gender Equity Program, granted by the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women, in recognition of the work developed by Itaipu in guaranteeing equal opportunities for male and female staff, received in Brasília-DF, on March 25.

ECO Awards 2009, category Sustainability in Processes, issued by the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-United States - Amcham and the newspaper Valor Economico, on November 27, São Paulo-SP.

2008

The 2007 "National Tourist Attraction" Award granted by magazine Brasil Travel News to the Itaipu Tourist Complex was presented in São Paulo at the Hotel Crowne Plaza on March 26.

Ecology and Environmental Conservation Award granted by the Curitiba City Council on June 19, to Nelton Friedrich, Coordination director, for the work done in the social-environmental field through the implementation of the Cultivating Good Water Program. 

"National Business Social-Environmental Responsibility Distinction" Award granted by Instituto Ambiental Biosfera for Itaipu's host of social-environmental responsibility initiatives, São Paulo (SP), October 17.

2007

Included in the wonders of the modern world list drawn up by the television network CNN in January. In the list, Itaipu features among the great works of engineering, technique and design.

"March 19" (19 de Março) award granted by the Order of Brazilian Auctioneers and magazine “O Pregoeiro” for the holding of the first binational electronic trading floor. The award was presented at the 2nd Brazilian Conference of Auctioneers in Foz do Iguaçu, in March.  

"Top Ten in Tourism" (Os 10 Mais do Turismo) award in the category “National Tourist Attraction” granted to the Itaipu Tourist Complex. Presented by magazine Brasil Travel News and received in São Paulo, on March 29.

Included in the list of the 25 Wonders of the World drawn up by the British company that publishes the Rough Guide travel books. Announced in May, the list was compiled to celebrate the 25 anniversary of the Rough Guides.

"5th Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking" Award for Itaipu having been considered the promoter of the best environmental initiative in 2007, with the Cultivating Good Water Program. This award was granted by the Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking Program and presented in the Masp auditorium in São Paulo by Haroldo Mattos de Lemos, representative of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on September 26.

Fome Zero Certificate in recognition of the actions developed towards the implementation of the Business and Information Telecenter project. The certificate was presented at the National Trade Confederation auditorium in Brasília-DF on December 5. 

2006
“National Distinction in Environment, Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility” (Destaque Nacional em Meio Ambiente, Desenvolvimento Sustentável e Responsabilidade Social) award granted by the Instituto Ambiental Biosfera (Biosphere Environmental Institute) and the Instituto Brasileiro de Estudos Especializados - Ibrae (Brazilian Institute of Specialized Studies) for the contribution to its industry's projects, actions and initiatives that result in actual improvement to the people's quality of life nationwide, received in February.

Abes Award granted by the Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Sanitária e AmbientalAbes (Brazilian Association of Sanitation and Environmental Engineers) in the public company category, in recognition of projects and initiatives developed by the Cultivating Good Water program in the 29 cities of the Paraná Basin III, received in July.

2005 Betinho/Ibase Social Balance Seal (Selo Balanço Social Ibase/Betinho 2005) granted by the Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analyses (Instituto Brasileiro de Análises Sociais e Econômicas - Ibase), received in August. The right to use the seal attests that Itaipu complies with the transparency and social balance publication criteria required by Ibase and submits to complaints and suggestions posed by the society regarding the company's work.

Social Management Excellence Distinction (Destaque Excelência em Gestão Social) award promoted by Editora Expressão in collaboration with consulting companies Civitas and Lauster, granted for the 3rd Business Social Responsibility Survey of the South, in September.

Coge Foundation Award granted by the Coge Foundation (Fundação Coge) in the category Environmental Initiatives for the Cultivating Good Water Program, considered the best environmental initiative developed by companies in the Brazilian electricity industry, in November.

2006 Pro Gender Equality Seal (Selo Pró-Eqüidade de Gênero 2006) of the 1st edition of the 2005/2006 Pro Gender Equality Program, granted by the Special Office of Policies for Women (Secretaria Especial de Políticas para as Mulheres) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (Unifem) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) to public companies that have adopted practices fostering gender equality and equal opportunities for men and women, in December.

2005
“Top of Mind” award granted by magazine Amanhã.

“Zilda Arns Social Responsibility Award – Top Social ADVB-PR (Brazilian Marketing and Sales Directors Association – Paraná Chapter)” (Prêmio Zilda Arns de Responsabilidade Social – Top Social ADVB-PR - Associação dos Dirigentes de Vendas e Marketing do Brasil Seção Paraná) for the Cultivating Good Water program, granted by the ADVB Institute of Social Responsibility (Instituto ADVB de Responsabilidade Social).

2nd “FAE/Fiep – Social Responsibility” award granted by the School of Business Administration and Economics (Faculdade de Administração e Economia - FAE) along with the State of Paraná Industry Federation (Federação das Indústrias do Estado do Paraná - Fiep).
 
Special award granted by NGO Iniciativa da Carta da Terra for the Cultivating Good Water program, as an example of socially and environmentally responsible public company.

13th “Ecological Expression – Non-formal Environmental Education on the Lajeado Xaxim and Rio Sabiá Micro-Basin” award (13º Prêmio Expressão de Ecologia - Educação Ambiental Não-formal na Microbacia do Lajeado Xaxim e Rio Sabiá) granted by Editora Expressão de Ecologia for the Environmental Education for Itaipu Sustainability program (Educação Ambiental para Sustentabilidade da Itaipu), one of the Cultivating Good Water program initiatives.

“Itaipu Electronic Newspaper – Best in the South” award (Prêmio Jornal de Itaipu EletrônicoMelhor da Região Sul) and finalist among the top three in Brazil in the In-House E-News category, granted by the Brazilian Association of Business Communications (Associação Brasileira de Comunicação Empresarial - Aberje).

1st “FAE/Fiep/2004 – Social Responsibility” award granted by the School of Business Administration and Economics (Faculdade de Administração e Economia - FAE) along with the State of Paraná Industry Federation (Federação das Indústrias do Estado do Paraná - Fiep).

Tribute by the House of Representatives through the exhibit “Itaipu 30 years – energy for all” at the Espaço Cultural Mário Covas in Brasília.

2003
11th “Ecological Expression – Conservation of Natural Resources - Private Sector” award (Expressão de EcologiaConservação de Recursos Naturais Setor Privado) for the project “Studies of Fish Eggs and Larvae in the Itaipu Reservoir” (Estudos de Ovos e Larvas de Peixes no Reservatório de Itaipu) granted by Editora Expressão.

10th “Environmental Education – Outreaching Dignity Trophy” award (Educação AmbientalTroféu Dignidade Solidária) for the project “Social Sustainability of the Village C Area – Outreach Electricity” (Sustentabilidade Social da Região da Vila C - Energia Solidária) granted by the Paraná Citizen Participation Center (Centro Paranaense de Cidadania - Cepac).

2002
“Best Company History Publication in the South” award (Melhor Publicação de Memória Empresarial da Região Sul) for the book “Livro dos Causos”, which brings stories and anecdotes published throughout the years in the Itaipu Newspaper (Jornal de Itaipu), granted by the Brazilian Association of Business Communications (Associação Brasileira de Comunicação Empresarial - Aberje).

“Innovation in the South”  and “Innovation Brazil” awards (Inovação da Região Sul e Inovação Brasil) for the Itaipu Bulletin Board Newspaper (Jornal de Itaipu Mural), granted by the Brazilian Association of Business Communications (Associação Brasileira de Comunicação Empresarial - Aberje).

“Best in the South in the Internet Category” award for the Itaipu website, granted by the Brazilian Association of Business Communications (Associação Brasileira de Comunicação Empresarial - Aberje).

10th “Ecological Expression – Conservation of Natural Resources - Private Sector” award (Expressão de EcologiaConservação de Recursos Naturais Setor Privado) for the project “Studies of Fish Migration in the Paraná River” (Estudos de Migração de Peixes no Rio Paraná), granted by Editora Expressão.

2001
“Grade 100 Company” award (Empresa Nota 100), granted by Editora Empreendedor.

Commendation plaque “Volunteers of the year 2001” in the Companies category for relevant services rendered in favor of the community via social programs. Through the Reviving Program and the Diabetes Empathy Group, the company acted as a facilitator in the creation of the Foz do Iguaçu Diabetics Association (Associação dos Diabéticos de Foz do Iguaçu - Adifi).

2000

“Best In-House Newspaper in Brazil” award (Melhor Jornal Interno do Brasil) for the Itaipu Newspaper (print, later replaced by the electronic version), granted by the Brazilian Association of Business Communications (Associação Brasileira de Comunicação Empresarial - Aberje).

1998
Award “Procel 1998 – Honorable Mention” in recognition of the actions fighting electricity waste in 1997, category Electricity Industry Companies, granted by the National Electricity Conservation Program (Programa Nacional de Conservação de Energia - Procel).

“Best In-House Newspaper in Brazil” award (Melhor Jornal Interno do Brasil) for the Itaipu Newspaper, granted by the Brazilian Association of Business Communications (Associação Brasileira de Comunicação Empresarial - Aberje).

Certificate “Children-Friendly Company” (Empresa Amiga da Criança) granted by the Abrinq Foundation for Children's Rights (Fundação Abrinq pelos Direitos da Criança) for the development of the Initiation and Incentive to Work Project (Projeto de Iniciação e Incentivo ao Trabalho - PIIT).

Award “Environmental Paraná” (Paraná Ambiental) in the category Formal Environmental Education for the project “Training of Environmental Education Agents in the Itaipu Lake Area” (Formação de Agentes Multiplicadores de Educação Ambiental na Região do Lago de Itaipu), granted by the Paraná Environmental Institute (Instituto Ambiental do Paraná - IAP).

1995
Inclusion of the power plant in the seven wonders of the modern world list published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (Asce) in the North American magazine “Popular Mechanics”.

Inclusion in the Brazilian edition of the Guinness World Records book as the “Largest Hydroelectric Power Plant in the World” in operation.
